Wolkberg Wilderness Hiking Guide

If you're looking for an unmarked, take-it-as-you-go hiking getaway in Limpopo, the Wolkberg Wilderness Area is a good bet. Located south west of Tzaneen, this protected area prioritises self-navigation in wilderness conditions over maintaing established trails.

Hikers approaching Wolkberg will need to know the administration and access points up front, as the area is controlled by permit.

Access, Permits and Where to Start

A permit is required, and it is issued by the Limpopo provincial authority, the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET).

Permits are handled at the Serala Forest Station, the usual entry point to the area.

What Hiking There Actually Looks Like

Wolkberg is one of the few South African reserves that is deliberately left in a largely wild, undeveloped state. This means hiking is self-directed, on a terrain with no distinct trails. The area is deemed sensitive and fragile, so only groups of limited size can camp in this part of the escarpment. The Limpopo authority has aims to keep visitor numbers low with wilderness conditions, and with access purely on walk-in basis and made by prior arrangement.

Water and Route Conditions

Hikers often camp beside streams and pools in the kloofs, below Serala peak at about 2 050 m. Most stream crossings are shallow in the dry season, but rivers can rise quickly after summer rain.
