About JHB Hiking
An independent magazine for people who hike in and around Johannesburg, and further afield when the long weekends allow.

JHB Hiking publishes practical, long-lasting guides for South African hikers: where the day trails near Johannesburg and Pretoria go, how to get a place on the multi-day routes, what to carry, and how to deal with ticks, snakes, heat and summer lightning.
What we cover
- Trails: day hikes around Gauteng and the Magaliesberg.
- Long Trails: multi-day routes and how bookings work.
- Gear & Skills: kit chosen for South African conditions.
- Safety: plain answers for staying well on the trail.
- Wild: the animals and plants you pass along the way.
The archive on this domain
This domain was once home to a hiking club website. Its trail notes, camp-fire tales and photo pages are kept in the archive without members' contact details. JHB Hiking is a separate, independent publication: it is not a club, does not organise hikes, take bookings or collect fees, and it is not affiliated with the Johannesburg Hiking Club or any other club, reserve or park authority.
How the guides are made
Guides are checked against park authorities, reserves and published sources. Fees, permits and access rules change, so every guide asks readers to confirm details with the reserve before travelling. Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons under free licences and are credited under each image.
