The Fish River Canyon is a must-do hike in Namibia, but there are strict requirements and a narrow season that South African hikers need to know before planning their trip. The trail, which runs for around 85 km and is usually completed in 4 to 5 days, is open only from 1 May to 15 September.
Summer heat is not the only challenge on the Fish River Canyon trail. The terrain is tough, with rocky terrain, steep gorges and water crossings to negotiate. For this reason, a doctor’s medical certificate is a strict requirement for the hike. The certificate must be issued within 40 days of the hike start date. It must state that the bearer is fit for strenuous multi-day hiking. Hikers should be in a good physical condition.
Hikers check in at Hobas, where permits and medical certificates are checked. From the main viewpoint near Hobas, the hike descends into the canyon and finishes 4 to 5 days later at Ai-Ais, where hikers can stay in a rest camp after the hike is finished.
A group size of at least three is required and most hikes are done in the larger groups.
The trail is not technical in terms of climbing or navigation, but the sheer length, steep sections, and unsupported nature of the hike demand high levels of fitness, preparation and decision-making.
The route begins at the main viewpoint, about 10 km from the Hobas camp. The route is not marked and simply follows the river, and the going is tough, with steep descents, rocky sections and deep sand to negotiate. Hikers must cross the Fish River daily, often more than once.
The views from the canyon rim are spectacular, with red rock formations, deep gorges and green oases. The trail itself is one of the longest in southern Africa, and the sheer length demands endurance.
As a final summary, to hike the Fish River Canyon, a South African hiker needs to book their hike outside of the summer months, from May to September, bring a current medical certificate to prove fitness for a multi-day hike and check in at Hobas before the start.
