For many a South African hiker, booking the legendary Otter Trail can be a quest in itself—one fraught with waiting lists, cancellations, and fierce competition for hiking group permits. But with some knowledge of the booking system, a firm handle on the trail’s demands, and a dash of flexibility, the route from Storms River Mouth to Nature’s Valley can be yours.

The Otter Trail is a 5-day, 4-night self-guided hike of about 45 kilometres, and every start date is jealously guarded through SANParks' booking system.

The trail as a competitive hike

The picturesque hike is, fundamentally, a competitive one. Reservations for the Otter Trail are handled centrally through South African National Parks (SANParks), with bookings for the 11th month from the current date opened on the 1st working day of each new month. Only then can enthusiastic hikers wrestle their way into the system.

A public booking page highlights the key issue: the trail is limited to 12 hikers per start date. Couple that limit with the 11-month advance booking window, and it’s clear why cancellations and waiting lists shape the trail experience.

The hikers and the trail

Hikers need to be fit for the trail, which is long and demanding and suits only those who are well prepared. The medical standards are clear: hikers need to be in good physical health, and must bring the SANParks trail medical questionnaire, signed by a doctor, to check-in.

This check helps keep unfit hikers off a gruelling, self-sufficient route that demands about 45 km total and the stamina to manage nature’s challenges. Some of these challenges include an obligatory crossing of the Bloukrans River that’s tide-dependent, a route that twists through woodland, forests, and beaches, and the physical demands of carrying personally-chosen gear and supplies along the way.

Hikers should plan those Bloukrans tides into their diaries and dates before booking, as the crossing is best made around low tide.

On the trail, nights are spent in shared huts that come with your booking. Lights and other power are a luxury. It’s a basic, but slick system, and one that requires individual flexibility, especially when huts are full to permitted capacity. But stay positive, there are pros and cons of shared space.

Booking the hike

So what to do when your heart and boots are drawn to Tsitsikamma National Park’s inviting sands? First, check SANParks availability on SANParks system, then check the tide tables for your dates, then see a doctor for the medical form.
