The Johannesburg Hiking Club having been in existence for 75 years decided to mark the special occasion with a dinner, cabaret and dance on Saturday 29^th July 2006.  The venue chosen was The Pavillion at Marks Park Sports Club in Emmarentia.  A Committee was formed and a great deal of thought and work went into the planning of this evening.   Nathalie Berquet was assisted by many and their contribution and enthusiasm were greatly appreciated by the club.

When we arrived it was wonderful to see everyone so smartly dressed. We were seated in the Pavillion which was tastefully decorated by Alan Ralph with Jill Weldon being responsible for the table decor and programme.  Mike McLoughlin was master of ceremonies for the evening.  Howard Rayner, the president of the club, welcomed us and we all enjoyed a delicious starter. While eating we were all entertained with an interesting dialogue between Dick and Paula Pointer who were members of the club many years ago.  They now live in the Western Cape but they shared many happy memories and amusing anecdotes of a bygone era.

The main course served was very tasty and all the people seemed to enjoy the food, wine and good company. Desserts, tea and coffee were served in the foyer followed by a cake decorated with the hiking club logo.

After dinner there was an air of excitement and anticipation as people looked forward to the cabaret show. We were certainly not disappointed!!!

Cathy Phillips, a talented harp player, opened the show with a few pieces which delighted the audience.

The Belly Dancers were beautifully dressed in authentic costumes.  As they danced they appeared to enjoy themselves which was wonderful to see.

Between the performers we all enjoyed the singing led by the very talented Mary and Mike supported by Dave Richardson.  Songbooks were provided and a great deal of fun was had by all.

Rod Allport and his group of gumboot dancers did themselves proud with their excellent display of local dancing accompanied by a fine drummer.

Alan Naismith, a well known member of the club who has been working in Zambia for a few years told a few jokes while we waited for the next act.

The “ Navy Rock and Rollers” came on next and their performance was also entertaining and  lively.  Neil Ransome looked very relaxed and was able to catch Nathalie with ease

during their dance.

Almost forgot, the mysterious lady in black. The final act called “ The Full Monty” brought the house down.  Five male hikers, with serious faces and dressed in full hiking gear came onto the stage and slowly stripped down to their underpants.  We were all wondering if they would “do it” and to our amazement they did!!!   It was a daring and very amusing act which left smiles on the faces of many people.

The show was a great success and it is fantastic that so many people from so many different walks of life can get together and have so much fun.

The dancing then began and went on for many hours. It certainly will be a night to remember for many years to come.
