Suikerbosrand Hiking Trails Guide

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is close enough to Johannesburg for a day hike, but the choice is really between short loops, a longer day trail, and a multi-day hut trail.

Short day walks from Diepkloof

For first-time visitors, the easiest option is a short morning walk. These loop trails start at the Diepkloof visitor centre.

At 10km or 17km, the Bokmakierie Trail lets you explore further with smaller koppies and sweeping berg views.

The overnight hut trail

A popular Suikerbosrand hiking trail is the self-guided overnight route with huts sleeping up to 10 people, over 1 to 6 days. The six huts are named after game: Springbok, Blesbok, Duiker, Eland, Hartebeest and Steenbok, and some may be closed for maintenance, so check when booking.

At each hut, you'll find basic overnight accommodation, but bring your own food and enough water, as water is scarce in the reserve.

Before you go

Note that when you get there, an entrance fee is charged per person, per vehicle. This fee can change, so check the current rates before you go. And be sure to have your permit and gear in order, with permits for the overnight trail booked in advance and day permits issued at the visitor centre.
