Everest base camp

EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK: 1-21 September 2007

Members of the Johannesburg Hiking Club in conjunction with Nomadic Adventures are planning a trip to Everest Base Camp, Nepal from 1 -21 September 2007.

This is one of the most spectacular treks in the Himalayas , along routes lined and carved out by beautiful, multi-hued prayer flags, prayer wheels and intricately carved Mani stones.

Not only is Everest Base exceptionally close the world's highest mountain (8,850m) but it is also home to the wonderful friendly Sherpa people, picturesque villages, and variety of cultures, traditions, colourful festivals and monasteries.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Depart South Africa

Day 2: Arrive Kathmandu and transfer to Hotel Annapurna 5*.

Day 3: Full day guided sightseeing around of the Kathmandu valley, taking in such sights as Swayambhunath, one of world’s most glorious, ancient, enigmatic and holiest of Buddhist Chaitya, Bouddhanth, a colossal and ancient Stupa; Guheshwari, which is where Sati, the consort of Siva, immolated herself due to her father’s insult and Pashupatinath with two tiered golden roof and silver doors . Enjoy a welcome dinner hosted by our Nepalese team. 

Day 4: Flight: Kathmandu (1,310m) - Lukla (2,840m). Trek to Phakding (2,610m). (2-3 hours). The flight into Lukla is a lifetime experience, in itself. The airfield is on a slope and the difference between the two ends of the runway is about 60 meters! Here, you will meet with your trekking crew and identify your gear. Then, after lunch we will begin the trek for a few hours along the Dudh Kosi River to the village of Phakding 2,610 m. Lodge overnight.

Day 5: Trek Phakding to Namche (3,440m) (5-6 hrs).

We continue north up the Dudh Kosi valley to Jorsale, where we enter the Sagarmatha National Park. After we have cleared our trekking permits, we continue along the trail, crossing the Bhote Kosi River to begin the steep climb up to Namche Bazaar 3,440m. 

Day 6: Rest day at Namche for acclimatization., a famous picturesque Sherpa village. Overnight Lodge.

Day 7: Trek Namche to Tengboche (3,860m) (5 hrs).

Our trek today will afford us incredible views of the soaring peaks of Thamserku as we steadily descend to the Imja Khola and have lunch at Phunki. Here, we will see a series of water driven prayer wheels. After lunch will begin our 2 hr ascent to the famous Tengboche Monastery (3,860m) -one of the most beautiful places in the world. Overnight Lodge.

Day 8: Trek Tengboche to Pheriche (4,312m) (5 hrs).

We set off up to Imja Khola valley towards Pangboche at 3,900m and stop for lunch. Later, we will visit the Monastery and look at the Yeti scalp before moving on towards the summer village of Pheriche (4,260m). Overnight Lodge.

Day 9: Trek Pheriche to Lobuche (4,920m) (4-5 hrs).

We ascend up a small ridge and contour around the base of Khumbu Glacier and stop for lunch at Dhugla (4,600m). After lunch, we take a steep ascent to the terminal moraine of the glacier from where the views are breathtaking. We continue again along the moraine and overnight at the foot off the Lobuche Ice Fall (4,930m). 

Day 10: Trek Lobuche to Gorakshep (5,140m) (4 hrs).

Our trekking distance today is not so far, but we will wake early in the morning and move forward to Gorek Sherpa for our next night stop. Overnight Camp or Lodge.

Day 11:Today, we climb up Kala Patthar (5545m), a steep ascent which allows us to get excellent views of the mighty Everest Peak. Kala Patthar is a hard pull but, the view from the top surpasses anything you can imagine and only the creaking of the glaciers around us disturbs the silence. This is the roof of the world. For those with the energy to descend and then head up to base camp itself can do so before returning to Gorekshep.

Day 12: Trek to Dingboche (4,410m) (4 hrs).

Today we continue or trek back down the mountain to Dingboche

Day 13: Trek Dingboche to Tengboche (3,860m) (5 hrs).

Today is an easier walk along the Imja Khola with a visit to the gompa at Pangboche, before we make a short climb up to the Tengboche Monastery.Lodge Overnight.

Day 14: Trek Tengboche to Namche (3,440m) (4 hrs).

The trail descends steeply towards Pungki Thanka and then we head on another steep climb to Namche Bazaar. Lodge Overnight.

Day 15: Trek Namche to Phakding (2,610m). (3-4 hours).

We trek down along the gorge of the Dudh Kosi to the small village of Phakding . Overnight  Lodge.

Day 16: Phakding to Lukla (2,840m) (3 hrs).

We trek to the mountain airstrip at Lukla where we will catch our return flight to Kathmandu the following day. Weather permitting your trekking crew might prepare a farewell treat for you. You would be expected to join in the singing and the dancing! Overnight Lodge at Lukla.

Day 17: Flight: Lukla (2,840m) - Kathmandu (1,310m). Hotel Overnight.

Day 18: Free day to explore, and enjoy Kathmandu. Hotel Overnight.

Day 19: Free day to explore, and enjoy Kathmandu. Hotel Overnight.

Day 20: Final Departure. Overnight Doha (at airlines expense assuming you fly Qatar )

Day 21: Depart Doha to arrive Johannesburg
