The 75^th Anniversary Dinner Dance has certainly made a mark in the clubs history. Sporting a full house of 200 people, many of whom were Youthful Hikers. The Cabaret show was superbly choreographed and produced by Nathalie Berquet and her committee. All the hard work for rehearsals resulted in a truly entertaining and wonderful show. Well done Nathalie! 

The Fanie Botha was a wonderful hiking experience in the picturesque Sabie area. The trail is one of the pioneer trails in South Africa. Sad that many folk deem it as one of the less popular big hikes. Non the less, this hike was an opportunity for quite a few of the “oldies” to join us. Thank you Nick Corbin for your excellent leadership!

Slagthoek to Kingdom – one would never believe that only 2 hours from JHB near Middleburg, there is a game farm, nestled in a magnificent valley, the Olifants Gorge. Here we have the confluence of the Olifants and the Wilge Rivers. We found ourselves once again crossing these rivers in “Fish River” style. It seems that in mid summer, base trailing from either camp would be advisable. We were a group of 17, 6 of which were new youthful hikers. This was certainly an adventure filled hike, slightly tougher than your average backpack. I booked this hike noticing that Peter Burman frequents the area. My curiosity was certainly worthwhile the experience – Thankyou Peter for leading our team in your usual superb style. Knowing the area, Peter led us off the regular path on day 2 to a totally hidden bush camp. The story goes that a millionaire has leased the camp for the last 2 years from the farmer for a huge some of money – to have exclusive rights to entertain all his friends. The basic facilities probably sleep about 24 +, with a Lapa, kitchen and ablutions. If we could, this could be an amazing base camp venue for the club! One to organize! 

Coming up – The Serendipity Trail in Nylstroom. At long last we have an easier trail, ideal for novices.  In September, we have the privilege of Deon Van Rensburg leading the Didima Cave Trail in the Cathedral Peak area of the Drakensberg. Deon is highly knowledgeable of the Bushmen paintings in the area, including Eland Cave.  Both trails are full – there is always a waiting list, phone me if you are keen.

The Swellendam Trail is also fully booked for the 27^th December – again put your name on the waiting list. Alternatively, Neil Ransome is leading the same trail 2 weeks earlier.

Thankyou to Wendy Farrow, Ina Smit and Sarah Procter for offering their assistance in running Youthful Hiking. From time to time you will be communicating with them.
