Sediba Hiking Trail, Memel

Located near Memel, a tranquil village in the corner of the North Eastern Free State.  The name Memel means ‘surrounded by water’.  Its approximately 240km from Johannesburg, 47km from Newcastle and 60km from Vrede.

 

The name Sediba means ‘fountain water’ and gives a good indication of what can be expected on the trail.  Day one is 10,5km with the sound of cascading water at Khwela Kraal where a tea break will be perfect and at ‘Ipikiniki’ the refreshing water pools is just what you need at lunch time.

 

The base camp offers a breathtaking view and consists of 3 thatch roof chalets nestled in the mountains, with no electricity and accommodates up to 35 hikers.  The ablution facilities house five flush toilets and showers with hot water, which is provided by a ‘donkey’.  Facilities include a gas fridge, hot plate, pots and pans and kettle.  A lapa with braai facilities are also available.

 

The grasslands and Seekoeivlei wetlands are host to an estimated 350 bird species, 230 species already recorded included the Crowned, Blue and Wattled Crane, as well as the Rudds and Botha’s Lark.

 

Day two is 6km with views that will feed your soul!  This trail with many surprises installed for the hiker and which will not easily be forgotten.
