Home Trails/venues Sunday hikes Tswaing Crater
A unique geological wonder ...
A trail through the bushveld, on Gauteng’s doorstep, leads one around one of the worlds most extraordinary heritage locations, the Tswaing Meteorite Crater.
The rim of the saucer shaped crater rises to a height of some 60m above the saltpan. The crater is recognised as a remarkable geological feature and a well-preserved impact site.
It is estimated that a 50m meteorite struck the site some 200,000 years ago leaving a cavity in excess of one and a half kilometres wide.
An easy seven-kilometre trail takes one along the crater rim with the path leading down to the saline lake and includes observations of earlier salt-mining activities.
The excursion is a pleasant experience and the information centre displays evidence of the geological rock formations of the aftermath.
