Mission statement ...of the Johannesburg Hiking Club is to ensure and organise a continuing programme of hikes and hiking related events, and to foster a sense of responsibility towards the environment within which its hiking activities take place.


Take a hike in South Africa...interested?Meet like minded outdoor and conservation orientated people who wear heavy hiking boots and smell like the mountain air. Youthful, midweek and Sunday hikes, backpacks, base camp weekends, slide show/club eve and social events. Hiking in South Africa can be fun - try us!

Castle Gorge

Once you’ve made it to the saddle head off and explore. The rock formations will amaze you if you just use your imagination – chess pieces, dogs, seals. Relax by the pools for lunch, then head back to the car park.

One of the easier hikes with wonderful views from the kloofs.

Hike from Kei Mouth to Gonubie, and enjoy a few days of relaxation as well1.

Bergheim hike and braai

It’s a steep ascent but there is excellent hiking on top. Perhaps a swim in a natural pool is what you’re after – we can oblige. Return to a refreshing swim and braai.

Another option for the Transkei. Enthusiast. Backpack this wonderful section of the coast over 5 days

Fountain Gully hike

A bit of a steep hike to the top of the mountain, but rewarding views to the south of farm fields. There’s a vulture restaurant and the highest waterfall in the Magaliesburg to visit. Lunch next to and swim in cool pool.

One of the top big hikes in Southern Africa –100km. Traverses slopes and high peaks through the most beautiful scenery imaginable, including numerous waterfalls, cascades and pools.
