Mission statement ...of the Johannesburg Hiking Club is to ensure and organise a continuing programme of hikes and hiking related events, and to foster a sense of responsibility towards the environment within which its hiking activities take place.


Take a hike...interested?Meet like minded outdoor and conservation orientated people who wear heavy boots and smell like the mountain air. Youthful, midweek and Sunday hikes, backpacks, base camp weekends, slide show/club eve and social events. Hiking in South Africa can be fun - try us!

Fountain Gully

Once on top, great views with perhaps a swim and the view of the highest waterfall in the Magaliesberg.

Bartlett’s Farm

 

A relatively easy walk to the kloofs with running water. Take in some splendid view.

Castle Gorge

A favourite.  Once you’ve made it to the saddle head off and explore. The rock formations will amaze you if you just use your imagination – chess pieces, dogs, seals. Relax by the pools or the magnificent water fall for lunch, swim, then head back to the car park.

Distance hike

Challenge yourself in an exciting new distance hike, ending at Castle Gorge. 3 groups as follows: A – From Foothold , B – From Breedtsnek, C- From Fountain Gully.

Retief’s Kloof

Magnificent waterfalls and rock pools. Camping Sat night optional. Rating of hike to suit group.

Kommandonek

A hardish hike up to the blockhouse provides an excellent view of the Hartbeespoort Dam. There are kloofs to explore and maybe pass an elephant sanctuary on the way back. Relax with a braai to end the day’s outing.

Tswaing Crater

Tswaing – “place of salt”. Meteorite crater with salt lake.

Hennops Picnic Spot

Easy ramble near river and undulating hills. Picnic lunch afterwards.

Foothold Monthly Camp or day visit

As usual, and bring a drink at 17H45 to “Foothold Sundowner Classics”, 45 mins of music and discussion by Andy Johnston.

Foothold hike

Facilities open to all. Laze, walk, bird watch, socialise or help with maintenance. Sat eve S/C braai. Sun hike official or own arrangement.

Fanie Botha Trail

5 day hutted backpack. One of the pioneer hiking trails in SA. This beautiful hiking trail is located on the Drakensberg excarpment in the Sabie area, with splendid hiking.
